We all know the importance of recycling. Pre-cycling is the process where the purchaser considers the size of the container before purchasing it. This way you avoid buying over packaged products. For an instance, if a small cube of cheese is put into a large container, it doesn’t make sense to buy it. It’s a waste of packaging that just winds up in the garbage can. Instead you might buy cheese in slices that come in small wrappers. The food stays fresher and it’s more convenient. This also reduces the volume of waste to be recycled.
2. Use your own bag when shopping
Increasing plastic use is a major problem. Plastic grocery bags are not recyclable. They seem to end up on road sides and in the ocean. To avoid plastic bag use try keeping a set of recyclable canvas bags in your car. This way they are right at your fingertips when you need a bag. No thought required. Reusable bags can be multi-purpose and stand in for book bags, grocery bags or even catch overflow from work or school.
3. Conservation of water
Water is a priceless gift. There are many day to day opportunities to cut back on water use. Run your dishwasher only when it is full. Instead of filling the kitchen sink to wash a few items try using a smaller bowel in the sink for your soapy water. Then turn the faucet off between item rinsing. Add a water saver shower head.
4. Eat Healthy
Eating a diet rich in organic fruits and vegetables helps build a healthy immune system. You also avoid the bulky packaging from processed foods. The fresh scraps can be used for composting then added to house plants or your garden. Many leftover veggies are good added to homemade soup.
5. Preserve Energy
Both grownups and kids can learn to turn off lights when leaving a room. Another trick is to cut your thermostat back a little. An over-heated home can trigger asthma attacks. The heat also tens to dry out respiratory passages leading to winter colds. A too warm house makes for a restless nights sleep. If you feel cool just add a sweater or a pair of socks. When watching TV add a snuggle to throw over your legs. Energy saver light bulbs are a great way to conserve energy and cut your power bill. Using solar power to charge your devices is another good idea.
